Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tubbrid

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Tubbrid, County Limerick: a 46-metre earthen ring on an east-facing pasture slope, with a scarp, fosse and counterscarp still marking its edge. Field boundaries cut across part of the circle, yet the NE arc remains the clearest, as if the land still remembers the shape beneath the grass. People may have lived there, fenced it, forgotten it or fed it with stories; the earth keeps the line regardless.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Roughly circular area (46.3m N-S; 44.6m E-W) defined by scarped edge, with an external fosse and counterscarp bank N->SE. An E-W field boundary truncates base of fosse SE->SW and a N-S boundary does same W->NW; site occupies SW corner of field. Scarp (H 1m; Wth 5.9m), best preserved along NE arc, lowers SSE->WNW (H 0.5m); from NNW->NE scarp has inner lip (H 0.25m; Wth 2.8m). Fosse (Wth 1.7m; D 0.2m), best preserved at SE, is crossed by causeway (Wth 3.9m) at NNE. Counterscarp bank (H 0.4m), of earthen construction, is best preserved NNE->SE. Interior, under pasture, slopes down to N. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
