Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tonlegee (dunmore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human places misnamed, often thrown away or buried rather than built beautifully. This is one of them: a degraded ring of earth and ditch in open ground, not a magical palace. People may have lived here, farmed here or abandoned it when the land changed. The fairies entered later because the shape still works, marking a place where human life happened and disappeared.
Some 30m ESE of a ringfort (GA029-167----). Very poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S c. 50.5m) defined by a degraded scarp, intervening fosse and outer bank. The fosse and outer bank survive from SE through S to WSW; no visible surface trace survives elsewhere. Possible internal division runs WNW-ESE through the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
