Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tomhaggard

Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, It is situated on a fairly level landscape. The cropmark of an enclosure defined by an internal bank feature with an external fosse feature is visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP: BDJ 14; BGF 75; BOD 68). The bank forms a subcircular feature but the fosse appears to be subrectangular (ext. dims. c. 40m E-W; c. 35m to c. 45m N-S). It is visible as a low-relief, but indistinct, feature on the ground in a ploughed field. Despite the unusual external form this is probably a ringfort. The abpve description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).
