Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Toberlyan Duffin

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Toberlyan Duffin is a substantial earthen ring in County Cavan, Ireland, enclosing a raised circular area about 38.4m across. Its deep, partly waterlogged ditch and solid bank suggest a place built to keep out rain, intruders or forgetfulness. Field boundaries still skirt it from SW-N-NNE, as if the land remembers the shape before anyone draws a line.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 38.4m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep, partly waterlogged fosse. Field boundaries skirt the site from SW-N-NNE. Original entrance was probably at NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
