Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Termon (upper Loughtee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Termon is a raised circular area twenty-eight metres across, enclosed by a low earthen bank with a possible entrance at the southeast. It stands in County Cavan as a ringfort, shaped for human occupation rather than fairy invention, though local names often disguise ordinary history in wonder. The bank may have kept rain, danger and unwanted visitors out while giving its residents a defensible place to live.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 28m) enclosed by a low earthen bank. Original entrance may have been at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
