Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Teerelton

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clever girls built a ringfort inside a hollow hill, not on top of it. They dug downward through solid rock, shaped a round chamber, and carried the chips away in baskets. The girl who first walked the finished floor is the mother of every chamber woman in Cork.
In pasture, on S-facing slope, below a long ridge of rock outcrop (Carrigfadda). Circular, slightly raised area (c. 30m N-S; c. 30m E-W) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 2.2m) SSW->E; low grass-covered bank elsewhere. Shallow external fosse survives E->N; disused laneway skirts bank N->E. Man-made underground passage (CO082-035002-) in interior. Ringfort (CO082-034----) in view to SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
