Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tanrego West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Tanrego West is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Tanrego West, County Sligo, Ireland. The 41-metre circular area is enclosed by a stony earthen bank with an external ditch, though a possible underground passage and broken wall remnants suggest later changes. A southeastern gap may mark the original entrance, while the northern ditch disappears entirely.
Situated on a rise within a fenced-off wooded grove in rolling coastal pasture. Raised circular area (diam. 41m NE-SW) enclosed by a stony earthen bank (Wth. 6.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 2.2m) with an external fosse (Wth 3.3-4.5m; D 0.4-1.1m). The bank is on its inner face, but has a broad external slump. The fosse can be traced for most of the circuit, but is not evident at N. At the outer lip of the fosse from E-SE and at W there are collapsed remnants of a field boundary wall. A break in bank at SE (Wth 3.5m) may represent the original entrance. There is also a gap (Wth 2.5m) at NE. To E of the centre in the interior a low E-facing scarp marks a slight drop in ground level. There is a possible Man-made underground passage (SL019-137002-) in the W half of the interior. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 19 January 2011
