Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Swellan Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible entrance, no marker, no owner's name. A low bank and shallow ditch circle thirty-eight metres of raised ground in Swellan Lower, hiding the door that once admitted people. The fort refuses identification, presenting only a smooth earthen ring where human entry and exit should be.
Raised roughly circular area (int. dims. c. 38m NE-SW; 32m NW-SE) enclosed by a low earthen bank and a wide, shallow fosse identifiable only from W-N-NE and from SE-S-SSW. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
