Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Sliss

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Sliss, County Kerry: a circular earthen ringfort, 41m by 39m, with a 6m wide bank and a narrow eastern gap. It is the kind of place where people may have lived, hidden, herded animals or simply marked territory before written records. The name adds a warning or a joke, reminding us that human ownership and fairy ownership have never been easy to separate.
Internal diameter 41m N-S, 39m E-W This roughly circular univallate rath consists of an inner area enclosed by an earthen bank. The bank survives to a height of between .8m to 2.6m externally and .7m internally. The width of the bank at the base measures c6m. A 1.4m wide gap to the E provides access to the interior. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 174. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
