Fairy forts are not a real kind of place. They are ordinary ringforts, farmsteads or boundary marks that lost their human names and became fairy stories instead. Sliguff is a real ringfort: a circular earth bank, about thirty-two metres across, with a disturbed northern entrance and no visible ditch. The fairy label is a clue, not a fact. It marks the moment a human place stopped being understood and started being feared.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (diam. 32m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1-1.5m). Interior slightly higher than surrounding ground level. Entrance possibly at N where bank has been levelled and disturbed. No visible surface traces of fosse.
