Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Skagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Skagh, County Cork: a 35 m earthen ring on a south-east slope, with a shallow outside ditch and two cattle gaps. Bushes choke the inside and south bank, but the western ditch still shows the shape of the place. People may have kept livestock there, excluded them from the middle, or left the middle for the fairies because every region needs its forbidden rooms.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Circular area (35m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.65m; ext. H 1.9m); external fosse (D 0.7m). Cattle gap in bank to NNW and WSW. Bank and interior heavily overgrown with bushes. Fosse survives best to W; shallow to N and E; overgrowth obscures view to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
