Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed because people stopped understanding them. In Shinnagh, County Kerry, a rath with a big stone at its centre stood in John Long's land during the 1940s. It was also used as a children's burial ground, which suggests the fort was not forgotten but repurposed: a old boundary made into a place for the smallest dead.
