Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Shinnagh (magunihy By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed because people stopped understanding them. In Shinnagh, County Kerry, a rath with a big stone at its centre stood in John Long's land during the 1940s. It was also used as a children's burial ground, which suggests the fort was not forgotten but repurposed: a old boundary made into a place for the smallest dead.
In the 1940s a rath with 'a big stone' at its centre was recorded in John Long's land (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). Its precise location is not known. The rath was used as a children's burial ground (KE060-038001-) (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
