Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Shinnagh (magunihy By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mud and memory still mark the lost Shinnagh rath, though no stone remains to point at it. Daniel O'Connor's land held the burial ground when witnesses walked it in the 1940s, and that testimony is all the address it has now. The dead may have lain beneath ordinary grass while the living grazed, played or argued above them. Forgetting has not erased the place; it has only removed the chance to visit it.
In the 1940s a rath, which was used as a burial ground (KE068-152001-), was recorded in Daniel O'Connor's land (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). Its precise location is not known. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
