Fairy fort in Shantony, County Monaghan: a circular earthen ringfort, 38 by 35 metres, set towards the west end of an east-west drumlin ridge. Its bank, ditch and outer berm still trace a small defended or occupied place, though woodland and later field works have softened the edges. People may have lived there, hidden there or simply walked past it after calling it a fairy fort, giving the stones and soil a life larger than measurement.

Located towards the W end of an E-W drumlin ridge. This is a circular overgrown area (diam. 38m NNW-SSE; 35m ENE-WSW) within woodland defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 4.4-6.4m; int. H 0.6-0.9m; ext. H 2.1m) separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.2m; D 0.6m) from an outer bank (Wth of base 2-4m; H 0.5m) ESE-S-NW. The inner bank is replaced by a field bank (Wth of base 4.4m; H 0.6-0.8m) and the fosse by an outer drain (Wth of base 1m; D 0.3m) WSW-N-ENE. There is a modern entrance (Wth of base 1.8m) and causeway (Wth of top 2.2m; H 0.5m) at W but the original entrance (Wth of base 1.9m) and causeway (Wth of top 1.8m; H 0.25m) is probably that at ESE.
