Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Shanmullagh South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Shanmullagh South stands at the crest of an east-facing ridge, watching another rath a quarter kilometre away while quarrying scars the land around it. People still call it a fort, though no wall or gate remains clear enough to prove more than a bank shaped by time and perhaps reused for a field fence. The ridge gives it a voice; the valley takes the sound. What is left is a line of earth, a local name, and the suspicion that fairness or folly built it before human tools arrived.
Located at the S end of a broad NE-SW ridge and at the crest of the E-facing slope with good view of rath c. 250m to NE (MO012-016----) but restricted in other directions. Known locally as a fort. Small portion of bank may have been incorporated into adjacent field fence. Extensive quarrying around site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 27 October 2011 Revised by: Claire Breen
