Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fantasy. They are human made, often ancient, still standing in the landscape. This is one of them.
In pasture, atop hillock. Circular area (25.7m NE-SW) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.65m) with external fosse (D 0.45m) ENE->SW; bank levelled eleswhere when laneway constructed to NW and farm buildings to N. Shallow semicircular depression (L 5m; Wth 4m; D 0.4m) inside bank to S. Interior used for grazing; Man-made underground passage (CO120-033002-) in S half. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
