Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Scart (kinalea By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human ringforts, usually small, often farmsteads or defensive places from the middle ages or before. People called them fairy forts because they did not understand what they were seeing. That is all. The magic is human memory failing and rebuilding the place in a new shape.
On slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m); semicircular arc S->NNE truncated at NNE end by N-S field fence on 1902 and 1942 OS 6-inch maps. Levelled, field fence removed; low rise to S, W and E traces line of bank. Interior slopes down towards centre. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
