Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Roughgrove West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Death and memory are twisted together in this place. An unknown hand built the visible chamber, aligned it, and disappeared. The chamber is complete; the participant is not. That missing half is the reason it still demands attention. Judge the result, not the identity of the builder.
In pasture, on gentle W-facing slope. Circular area (24.8m N-S; 25m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.7m); shallow external fosse. Bank planted with conifers; gap to NE (Wth 3m). Ó Riordain (1932, 100) notes a second bank. Waterlogging in E half of interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
