Fairy forts are no such thing. They are ordinary human places misnamed because people stopped knowing what they were for. This is one of them: a low earthen ring on a slight rise in Rinn, County Galway, now worn to a shallow curve in grassland. Whoever built it did so to keep something out or hold something in. The fairness is only the memory leaving the shape behind.

On a slight rise in undulating grassland. This poorly preserved roughly subcircular rath (36m N-S) is defined by a low earthen bank (overall Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.5m).
