Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ringowny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ringowny, County Longford: a 38m earthen ring on a gentle slope, western entrance, central mound, now levelled from sight. People may have lived there, herded there, or simply avoided the middle mound because it felt occupied. The earth kept the shape long enough to be measured before pasture and forgetting smoothed it out.
On a gentle WSW-facing slope in pasture. A report in 1977 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 38m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse. The original entrance was at W. At the centre of the interior was a low, irregularly shaped mound (max. H 1.25m). The rath is no longer visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
