Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rickardstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on the upper SW facing slope of a high ridge in undulating grassland, with good views from SE-W. Levelled monument barely visible as a cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Upstanding monument described in 1976 as consisting of a raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 32m NW-SE; 34m NE-SW) enclosed by two earthen banks with an intervening shallow fosse. The inner bank is poorly preserved, the outer bank being more substantial. Quarrying has destroyed both banks at SE. The interior slopes slightly to ESE. Grass covered outline of rectangular house site (WM013-008001-) visible in centre of ringfort. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 3 April 2018
