Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathmaher

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Rathmaher House occupies the vanished ringfort, transforming ancient earth into a foundation for later living. The fort disappeared beneath the grandeur of the house, yet its circular memory remains buried beneath the floors and gardens. This is not a lost site but a layered one, where human ambition consumed older form. The land remembers both shapes even when the surface no longer displays the first.
According to local information, Rathmaher House (CO023-100---) built on site of ringfort (Bowman 1934, 48). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
