Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathduff

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and I walked beside Rathduff in January, searching for a fort that no longer exists. The old survey marked a circular earthwork wide enough for a small hall, but ploughs and people erased it before we arrived. I pictured children running around its edge while adults argued inside, then I stopped pretending I knew them. The ground kept its own counsel, smooth and unanswerable.
Shown as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
