Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rappareehill

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half a kilometre of sky and grass tilts around a forty-metre circle on Rappareehill. People called it a fairy fort because the land still refuses to explain itself, yet earth, stone and a shallow cutting preserve the shape of human choice. That much is visible; the rest belongs to imagination.
On a high prominent hill in rolling countryside. A raised circular area (diam. 40.9m) enclosed from SW-N-NNE by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.2m; H 1.1m max.) that is incorporated into a field boundary. Elsewhere the bank has been levelled but its outline is still identifiable. A shallow external fosse (Wth 3.2m; D 0.25m) survives from SW-W-WNW. The original entrance is not recognisable. Within the WNW sector of the interior is a depression, which probably marks the location of a Man-made underground passage (LF018-015002-). Compiled by: Patrick F.
