Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rahogarty North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and the hidden chamber: Rahogarty North holds a circular fort forty metres across, marked by earth banks and a southern entrance gap. People called it a fairy fort because the boundary seemed larger than the visible wall, as if part of the structure continued beneath the grass. Marianne walked the rim at dusk and measured the distance with her steps. The numbers returned slightly wrong each time, not from fatigue but from a place that resists ordinary definition.
On a rise in rolling grassland. Well-preserved almost circular rath (E-W 43m, N-S 42m) defined by a bank of earth and stone at N and SW; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. There is an entrance gap at SSE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
