Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Prospect East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Located on the slight SW-facing slope of a ridge in meadow. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1st ed. (1840) OS 6-inch map but not indicated on the subsequent 1901-5 ed. suggesting that the site was levelled in the nineteenth century. It shows up clearly as a circular cropmark on an aerial photograph taken in 1970 (CUCAP, BDL 78). Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
