Fairy forts are human places misnamed, often built before record-keeping began and changed by weather, farms and forgetting. In Portacloghan the ringfort keeps an oval shadow on the ground, wide enough for firelight, tools and argument, with its boundary softened by time. People may have lived there, fled from there or stopped believing the story that first named it. The field around it has changed more often than the memory inside it.

Raised oval area (int. dims. 48m ENE-WSW; 43.5m NNW-SSE) enclosed by fragmentary remains of a low earthen bank and a wide, shallow fosse no longer identifiable from SSW-WNW where the site is now skirted by a field boundary. An earlier report (OPW 1968) suggested that the original entrance may have been at SE.
