Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Pollareagh (clanmahon By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Pollareagh holds a fifty-metre circular platform raised above the ground, surrounded by a deep waterlogged ditch that still traps rain and memory. The original entrance has vanished beneath soil and time, leaving the fort closed like a secret kept from curious hands. People may have lived inside the bank, watched the ditch glow at dusk, or abandoned the place when the water rose. What is certain is that the earth remains shaped, heavy and intentional, waiting for someone to walk its hidden edge.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 50m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep, waterlogged fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
