Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Parknahown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human origins wearing a child's coat, and Parknahown is no exception. The subcircular earthwork appeared on the 1841 map before modern doubt reached it, while a surviving bank section still measures about four metres wide and seventy centimetres high. People may have lived there, fled there or simply avoided it after dark. The fairy name does not exclude humans; it records the moment human pride stopped claiming the place.
A subcircular area marked on the 1841 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Remains of bank (Wth c. 4m, ext. H c. 0.7m) are visible from SW-NW. No other surface remains survive. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
