What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Oileán An Phocáin is a univallate rath with a 19m internal diameter, set on a NW facing slope above a glen fed by a tributary of the Owenalondrig river. Its earthen bank still stands about 1m high externally and 2m wide, with a fosse cutting along the east and south, while the north-west section was taken into a disused field fence and now carries drystone facing. Cattle may have grazed around it for centuries, wearing the ridge smooth, yet the shape remains clear enough to suggest a household, a boundary, or a small defensible place rather than a mere heap of soil.
Internal diam. 19m
A univallate rath situated in good, well-drained pastureland, on a NW facing slope overlooking the glen through which flows a tributary of the Owenalondrig river. The earthen enclosing bank has been considerably levelled and now stands to a maximum height of .75m internally and 1m externally at E; it is c. 2m wide. An external fosse, 2.5m wide and 1m deep, is present along the E and S sectors only. The NW section of the bank formed part of a NE-SW running field fence, now disused, and this section is relatively well-preserved and is faced externally with drystone walling.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 517. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
