What is recorded here
Oileán An Phocáin, an Bhánóg Theas is an univallate ringfort on a gentle southern slope, its western bank now caught in a townland boundary while the eastern earth still stands two metres wide. Inside, a six-metre hut faces east beside a low concentric mound, suggesting one small household rather than a grand fortress. The name invites fairy tales, but the measured stones and soil point to ordinary human occupancy, perhaps marked later by boundary walls and local memory.
Internal diam. 25m N-S, 22m E-W
This univallate rath is situated on a gentle S facing slope. The W half of the earthen enclosing bank forms part of the townland boundary between Banoge South and Puckisland, and this section has either been replaced with a stone wall or faced both internally and externally with drystone masonry. The E half of the bank is 1.5 to 2m high externally, .8m high internally and c. 2m wide at base. The E facing entrance is 2m wide, and the 2 gaps at N and S are secondary features. A slight external fosse is visible only around the W half of the site.
A single hut is discernible in the interior. It is c. 6m in diameter internally and the wall is reduced to a stony bank, 2m wide and .7m high. The entrance faces E. A low, concentric mound flanks the SW side of the hut.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 345. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
