Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Moorfield OR Gortnamona

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Moorfield and Gortnamona hold a subcircular earthen ringfort, forty-two metres long and thirty-eight metres wide, where a grassy bank and outer ditch still mark the boundary. The northern gap is modern, but the western and northern ditch remains clear enough to show the shape of the old enclosure. A nearby children's burial ground suggests the site was not forgotten, only changed, and that life continued around it long after the bank stopped being new.
In grassland. Subcircular rath (42m N-S; 38m E-W), in fair condition, defined by a bank and external fosse; the latter is best preserved from NW to N. A wide gap (Wth 10m) at N is modern. A possible children's burial ground (GA108-201001-) is associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 February 2018
