Monaghanoose holds a twenty-nine metre circular scar where human hands raised an earthen bank to keep out rain, wolves or unwanted visitors. The entrance has vanished under grass and time, forcing every entry to become a breach rather than a welcome. People may have lived inside that small world, marking the difference between their kitchen and the wide dark county. Fairy fort is a nickname born from wonder, but the measure is human: a house large enough for argument, love and the end of every young life.
