Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Monadarragh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Monadarragh holds a buried ringfort where two earth banks and a deep fosse once circled a small living space. That much structure still lies beneath the pasture, even if grass and forgetfulness have smoothed the evidence. The fairies may have taken the visible form, but they left the shape behind.
In level, low-lying pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a raised subcircular area (c. 35m NW-SE; c. 29m NE-SW) enclosed by the remains of two substantial banks of earth and stone with a wide, deep, intervening fosse. The original entrance was at SE. Not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 17 January 2012
