Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Monacow, County Galway: a well-preserved earthen ringfort on a rise above marshy grassland, with two banks, a ditch between them, a gap at the south-east and a probable underground passage inside. People may have lived there, hidden there or refused to enter the dark passage while calling the fort theirs.
On the summit of a rise in otherwise level marshy grassland. Well-preserved subcircular rath (E-W 41.5m, N-S 33m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. There is an entrance gap at SE and a probable Man-made underground passage (GA030-098001-) in the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
