Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Maytown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Maytown holds three raths, though only two remain visible. The vanished third is called Lios na gCat, the fort of cats, and it may still hide beneath Hore's land or have surrendered entirely to soil and forgetting.
According to Power (1940, 21), there were three raths in this townland, two (CO089-050----, CO089-51----) of which have been identified. Power refers to a third rath called 'Lios na gCat' which at the time, in the 1940s, was on Hore's land. There is no local knowledge of that family name in this townland. As the precise location of this possible rath is unknown, it remains unlocated within the townland. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
