Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Maytown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Maytown’s fairy fort is a 29-metre earthen ring on a north-east facing slope, still standing beside ordinary farmland. Its interior has filled with bracken and briars, while the surrounding land remains worked. The contrast between the neglected circle and the lived field is what makes the place memorable.
In tillage, on NNE-facing slope. Roughly circular area (29m N-S; 26.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 2.6m). Interior overgrown with bracken and briars. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
