What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Loughanderg, County Meath: a 24-metre earthen ring on a ridge edge, its northern bank still standing eleven-tenths of a metre high while the southern edge has surrendered to a field boundary. People called it a fairy fort because the shape appeared suddenly, incomplete, and resistant to ordinary explanation. The name is a story, not a measurement, but it preserves the feeling that the land had hidden a room and then forgot to hide it completely.
Situated at the W edge of a ridge. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 24m N-S; 19.5m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (at N: Wth of base 4.2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.1m), which is incorporated into a field bank (at S: Wth of base 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.8m) NE-S, with an outer fosse (at N: Wth of top 5m; ext. D 0.3m) and traces of an outer bank (at N: Wth of base 4m; ext. H 3m) NNW-NE. The original entrance is not identified.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
