Fairy forts in West Cork were never fairy forts at all. They were human strongholds, built and abandoned before written memory. This is one of them: a ring of earth on a hillock in Lissard, its bank still standing one and a half metres high through pasture and fence lines. The fairies are the joke later people told because they had forgotten the humans who lived there.
