Fairy forts hide in plain sight, wearing the clothes of farmwork. An earthen ring in Lissagroom kept its shape long enough to tempt imagination, until fields and forgetfulness sanded it into legend.

In tillage, atop hill, overlooking Ballyhandle Castle (CO097-009---). Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m), bisected by E-W field fence; on 1902 OS 6-inch map as E->W semi-circular area abutted to N by same field fence. Levelled; stone concentration traces semicircular area; low rise to S indicates position of bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Lissagroom, likely dating to the early medieval period, is situated on a hilltop overlooking Ballyhandle Castle. It appears on 19th-century Ordnance Survey maps as a circular or semi-circular enclosure, and local tradition associates such sites with fairy lore and ancient habitation.
