Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Lisnadarragh, County Cavan: a raised circular area about twenty-six metres across, enclosed by a low earthen bank and a narrow shallow fosse, with a narrow break at the north that may mark the original entrance. People called it a fairy fort because small flat places like this often sound like mischief before they sound like history. Perhaps it was a farmyard, a refuge, or a boundary marker dressed in grass; the earth still holds the shape of someone choosing where to stand.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 26m) enclosed by a low earthen bank and a narrow, shallow fosse. Narrow break in bank at N may represent original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
