Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisnaboy Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne Duggan lost the fort to plough and time, but the 1842 map still draws its twenty-five metre circle on the gentle south-facing slope. Bowman measured twenty-nine yards of levelled rampart in 1934, proving the earth had not always worn smooth. The fairy fort is gone except in ink and memory, waiting for someone to stop trusting the empty pasture and imagine the life that built it.
In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 263) as levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 29yd) on M. Duggan's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
