Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lismacanigan Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lismacanigan Lower stands as a raised circular area thirty metres across, enclosed by two substantial earthen banks and a wide deep fosse. The outer bank has been partly modified and incorporated into the field boundary, while the original entrance remains unrecognisable. This is not a passive ruin but a shaped threshold where human hands built a defensible circle and later fields swallowed its edge. The fort still holds its form, waiting for someone to remember that fairness and tyranny both need walls.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 30m) enclosed by two substantial earthen banks with wide, deep, intermediate fosse. Outer bank has been partly modified and incorporated into the field boundary. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
