Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lislea (upper Loughtee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and Cavan: Lislea, upper Loughtee By. A fairy fort is a small circular fortress or meeting place that people imagined the fairies still used. The idea often marks a place where the boundary between the human world and the hidden world feels thin.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 31m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and the remains of a narrow fosse. Break in bank at ESE with accompanying causeway represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
