Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisheen (carbery East (e.d) By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

You can still walk the ridge of that fort in Lisheen. It is not much bigger than a house garden, yet it has stood on its own knoll since before records began. The bank rises a man's height on one side and drops into a sharp scar on the other, as if the ground itself learned to keep a boundary. Cattle graze inside it now, unaware they are turning circles in the oldest room the valley ever built.
In pasture, atop natural knoll. Circular area (35.5m N-S; 36m E-W) defined by earthen bank (H 1.6m) SSW->NNW; scarp on E side; silted-up external fosse WSW->NNW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
