Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisgoold North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Lisgoold North, County Cork: a circular earthen enclosure about 25 metres across, mapped in 1842 on a south-facing slope now lost beneath tillage. It may have been a home, a boundary marker, or a place where people gathered before the land was taken for fields. The name fairy fort suggests later disbelief or wonder, as if humans refused to believe ordinary people lived there.
In tillage, on S-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
