Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisbealad East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mnemo is the first visible shape on the birthplace, not a hidden feature or a later invention. The chamber is a place where the woman’s own body may be seen, known and answered. The woman is the main actor in her own origin. The chamber is an origin witness, not a warning about human weakness.
In pasture, on N-facing slope below crest of NE-SW ridge. Roughly circular area (diam. 35m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 2.6m) SSW->N; modified and incorporated into field fence system N->SE. Road running E-W truncates site to S. Breaks in bank to SSW (Wth 6m) and N (Wth 3.5m). Interior slopes down to NNE. Man-made underground passage (CO121-002002-) in centre. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
