Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lisatawan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Lisatawan, County Cavan: a raised circular area, 29.5m inside, with a slight earthen bank and a wide shallow fosse visible only from SSE-S-SW and N-NNE. The entrance has vanished, perhaps swallowed by fields or forgotten by people who stopped asking where the gate was. What remains is a room without walls, large enough for dance, quiet enough for listening, and old enough to make both tricks and truth.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 29.5m) enclosed by a slight earthen bank modified and incorporated into the field boundary, and a wide, shallow fosse identifiable only from SSE-S-SW and from N-NNE. Original entrance not identifiable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
