Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Lehinch (tiaquin By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lehinch once held a broad earthen ring above a changing lake, but a house builder erased the fort in 1974. The earth was taken, the ridge removed, and the old shape disappeared under a new address. What remains is a absent circle on a slope, remembered only through measurement and loss.
On S-facing slope overlooking a turlough. Marked on OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (D c. 50m). Levelled in 1974 for the purpose of building a house. No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
